Success at Parades
We experienced our town’s parade on the 4th of July, and unfortunately learned some things the hard way. And since the 24th of July (Pioneer Day) is just as much celebrated here, I thought I would give my tips for future parade-watching success.
Find Shade. Find a tree, or bring a beach umbrella, canopy, tent, or anything that will keep you cool. Unfortunately, this might mean getting there extra early to find a good spot. (My idea is to “save” your spot, considering my next idea).
Arrive Fashionably Late. This might only be applicable to families with small children, or young kids whose attention is not held very easily. Take into account all the “boring” stuff at the beginning that your kids might not care about, and the time that it will take the first float to even get to you. Had we known, we would have gotten to the parade about 1 hour after it started. By the time we left (being worn out from chasing the kids and bored from the boring, I finally saw the first big float.
Bring Entertainment. If you do arrive early, bring activities- sidewalk chalk, sparklers, pop-its, bubbles, etc. (Of course, whatever is age appropriate).
Bring Snacks/Water. Have plenty of healthy snacks and water since most likely, there will be candy thrown by every other float.
Bring Bags. This is for the candy and other loot they’ll catch. Put it in zip-lock or paper bags to keep and take home. Not only will they have something fun to take home, but this will also keep the little scavengers from eating it all at once, or letting it melt in their pockets.
