Surviving Bed Rest

As most of you know, carrying twins automatically puts you into the “high-risk” category. And, of course, you are that much more likely to be sentenced to bed rest. So, having been there myself for about 5 weeks, I thought I would give some of my tips for making it through. I was lucky enough not to have to take care of any older children, so some of these suggestions might not be possible for your situation.

1. If at all possible, have someone come and help, especially if you have other children at home. Either hire someone, or have a family member come to do laundry, cleaning, cooking, and errands. Do know that no matter who it is, it is difficult to have houseguests for too long. So, if you have someone staying at your house, set up guidelines before anything happens. (i.e. How long they will stay, specific things you want and don’t want them to do, etc).

2. Subscribe to Netflix or Blockbuster online. Some places offer in-store monthly memberships, but this will keep you from driving there. Most places offer up to 3 movies at a time, so you should have plenty options. Don’t forget to rent your favorite TV episodes as well.

3. Some of you may be on strict bed rest (flat on your back in bed), or even in the hospital. So, find a laptop for entertainment. You can watch your movies, play games, and find support groups to chat with on the Internet. (And read such blogs as these.) :)

4. Keep yourself busy learning new skills. This was the time that I got into making cards (still a favorite hobby of mine), scrap booking, and cross-stitching. I even had someone come to house and teach me how to crochet. Basically, think of anything you might want to learn or improve upon, because now is the time to do it. (Believe me, it will be much harder to find the time after your twins come). Plus, you’ll want a variety of things to do, because it is easy to get bored with the same activity.

5. If you like to read, stock up on good books. Personally, reading is an activity I enjoy only when I need some quiet time. So, the fact that it was quiet all the time made me not want to read. But, if you enjoy it, library cards are free. So, have someone check out some good classics for you.

6. Get ready for the day, every day. Take a shower/bath, do your hair, and even put on makeup. No one likes to feel gross in bed all day. So, make yourself feel beautiful, because you are! Even have some girl friends over and pamper yourself. Do pedicures, manicures, facials, etc.

Remember that this is all for a greater cause… your babies. So, the motherly selflessness starts now. Plus, every day that you keep those babies in there is that much less time they will have to spend in the hospital.

Feel free to add any other suggestions.
